It is commonly understood that the politics associated with a particular neighborhood is directly determined by its residents; the residents elect candidates that they believe will represent them and attempt to respond to their concerns and grievences. El Barrio is no different in this respect, but differs on personal reactions to the politics involved with the community.
Political Eras
With the neighborhood passing through many hands, there have been several distinct political eras. These eras are filled with history and leaders that define the image of the neighborhood at the time. The two eras: Italian-American Era (1916/1923-1955) and the Puerto Rican Period (1955 - Present) are consequtive and shows the ethinicity shift of the neighborhood from Italian and Irish to Puerto Rican and Hispanic. The following pages will touch upon the leaders, past and present that have shaped El Barrio.
